What Makes Plastic Surgery - 929 Words

Woman spend precious time comparing themselves to the celebrities Hollywood and the media has told them they should look up to. Yet, these celebrities are not always real; famous talents take advantage of plastic surgery on a daily basis. Doctors are persuaded to morph the faces normal women into that of a supermodel or actress, all for the sake of interesting television. Women take to social media to stalk out their favorite Hollywood dolls, searching for a source of inspiration. Hollywood and the media have extreme power over defining what makes a woman beautiful and have pressured millions of women to conform to their standards by getting plastic surgery. Celebrities’ use of plastic surgery has inspired everyday people to undergo†¦show more content†¦Plastic surgeon, Dr. John Norris’ four â€Å"conceptual1 types† separates patients based on their motivations for plastic surgery. If Norris feels patients want surgery for the wrong reasons, he has no problem declining. Before he agrees to perform the surgery, he screens his patients into one of his four groups. He considers the first group of patients realistic and self motivated. These patients wish to represent their bodies’ full potential. However, they have achievable and realistic goals. The second type of patient tries to please someone else. They may view plastic surgery as an answer to their relationship problems with a spouse. Norris usually persuades the third group of patients to wait. This group consists of parents bringing their children into the office to fix a flaw that bothers them but has no effect on the child. Norris calls the four th and final type of patient, â€Å"flighty†, and they seem to be the most unusual. These patients seek surgery for different reason, on numerous occasions they request a certain feature to resemble that of a celebrity. According to Norris, these patients are â€Å"psychologically unstable and impossible to satisfy† (Harris-Moore). Common patients in the â€Å"flighty† category are subjects on reality television shows since viewers often perceive as entertaining. Reality shows include The Swan, Extreme Makeover, and I Want a Famous Face. Often times the individuals featured on these types of shows tell their stories in return
